Strange Signal privacy policy
Last updated October 21, 2026
Strange Signal is a phone app made by Juniper Foundry LLC, a company in Austin, Texas ("we", "us"). This policy explains what the app collects, why, who else handles it, how long we keep it, and how you can have it deleted. It covers the Strange Signal app and the Strange Signal pages on this website.
The short version
- No account. You don't sign up or give us your name or email. The app creates a random ID for your install.
- Photos are used to make the effect, then discarded. During a session the app takes a still photo and sends it through our server to an AI service, which adds the effect. We don't save the photo on our servers. Your captures are saved only on your phone.
- No audio leaves your phone. The microphone measures how loud it is around you. Recordings are never saved or uploaded.
- No location. The app doesn't collect your location.
- No ads, and we don't sell your data.
- You can ask us to delete your data at any time by emailing strangesignal@juniperfoundry.io.
What the app collects and why
Camera photos
Strange Signal uses your camera to scan the room during a session. When the app detects activity, it captures a still photo automatically. That photo is resized and sent over an encrypted connection to our server. The server passes it, together with instructions describing the effect, to one of the AI services listed below. The service returns the finished image to your phone.
We don't store the photo on our servers. We keep only technical details about each request, such as which AI service handled it, how long it took, the size of the image, and whether it succeeded. The photo is captured without location or camera metadata.
The camera sees whatever it's pointed at, which can include other people. Please don't use Strange Signal to capture people who haven't agreed to it.
Microphone
During a session the app measures the sound level around you to drive the experience. To do this, your phone briefly records low-quality audio to a temporary file, reads the volume from it, and deletes the file when measuring stops. The audio itself is never saved or uploaded. The sound level numbers (how loud, not what was said) are saved with a capture's details.
Motion and environment sensors
The app reads your phone's motion and environment sensors (magnetometer, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer and light sensor) on your phone. When a capture happens, a snapshot of those readings is saved with the capture's details on our server.
Device and app information
We collect your phone's model, operating system and version, which sensors it has, the app version, and the random install ID. We use this to run the app, fix problems, and understand which devices it works well on.
Usage and crash information
The app records how it's used, such as when sessions start and end, how many captures are made, whether an effect succeeded, which upgrade options were shown or bought, whether you granted a permission, and error messages when something breaks. These events are tied to the random install ID and your device information. They never include photos, audio or location. We use them to improve the app and fix bugs.
Purchases
Purchases are handled by Google Play. We never see your card or payment details. We keep a record of each purchase (the product, the transaction ID, when it expires, and the purchase details our payments service sends us) so we can unlock what you bought and handle refunds and problems.
Saving and sharing
Saving a capture to your photo library or sharing it only happens when you choose to, through your phone's own save and share options. We record that a capture was saved or shared, not where it went.
What we don't collect
We don't collect your name, email address, phone number, contacts, location, or advertising ID. The app has no ads.
What stays on your phone
Your captures (the original photo, the finished image and any share card), your session history and your settings are stored on your phone. They stay there until you delete them in the app or uninstall it. Deleting a capture in the app removes it from your phone and marks its details as deleted on our server.
Who else handles your data
We use these services to run Strange Signal. Each one handles data only to provide its service to us.
| Service | What it does | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Google Gemini API | Creates the effect (our main AI service) | The photo and the effect instructions |
| fal.ai | Creates the effect if Gemini can't | The photo and the effect instructions |
| OpenAI API | Creates the effect if the others can't | The photo and the effect instructions |
| Supabase | Hosts our server and database in the United States | The install ID, device information, session and capture details, sensor snapshots, and purchase records |
| PostHog | App usage and crash statistics, stored in the United States | The install ID, device information, and usage events |
| RevenueCat | Manages purchases | The app's random user ID and purchase details |
| Google Play | Processes payments | What Google needs to complete your purchase |
The AI services receive only the photo and the effect instructions, never your install ID or device information. A photo usually goes to only one of them. If that one fails, the same photo may be sent to the next one.
We don't sell your data or share it for advertising. We may also share data if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users or others. If Strange Signal becomes its own company or is sold, the data may move to the new owner, who must keep following this policy or tell you about changes first.
How long we keep it
We keep the records on our server (install and device details, sessions, capture details, sensor snapshots, request details and purchase records) for up to 24 months, then delete them. Usage statistics are also kept for up to 24 months. If you ask us to delete your data sooner, we will. Data on your phone stays until you delete it or uninstall the app.
Deleting your data
Email strangesignal@juniperfoundry.io with the subject "Delete my data" and include the support ID shown in the app's Settings screen. Because the app doesn't use accounts, the support ID is how we find your records. We'll delete the records linked to it within 30 days and reply to confirm. You can also email us to ask what we hold about you.
To remove everything stored on your phone, delete your captures in the app or uninstall it.
Your choices
- You can allow or deny camera and microphone access in your phone's settings at any time. Sessions need the camera to work.
- You decide whether any capture is saved to your photo library or shared.
- You can delete captures in the app, and ask us to delete your server records.
Depending on where you live, you may have legal rights to access, correct or delete your personal information, or to object to how it's used. Email us to use any of them. We won't treat you differently for doing so.
Age requirement
Strange Signal is for people 13 and older. It isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app, email us and we'll delete the related data. If you're under 18, please use the app with a parent's or guardian's permission.
Security
Data travels between the app and our server over encrypted connections. Access to our database is limited to the people who run Strange Signal. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect what we hold.
This website
juniperfoundry.io doesn't use cookies, analytics or tracking. Our web host, Cloudflare, processes standard request information, such as your IP address, to deliver pages and protect the site.
Changes to this policy
If we change how Strange Signal handles data, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
